Op het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog was de tol voor Nieuwpoort hoog: na vier jaar beschietingen bleef van de stad en haar sluizenstelsel alleen nog modder en puin over. Toen in november 1918 de wapens zwegen, was het ordewoord van de teruggekeerde Nieuwpoortenaren 'Wederopbouw'. Naast het herstel van de sluizen en het ruimen van puin was er een acute nood aan (betaalbare) woningen voor de teruggekeerde mensen. De heropbouw van Nieuwpoort, vanaf 1919, liep niet altijd van een leien dakje, bijvoorbeeld door financiële moeilijkheden of politieke onmacht. Gelukkig kon de stad rekenen op de hulp, expertise en daadkracht van onder meer senator Emile Coppieters en architect Joseph Viérin. Aan de hand van nooit eerder gepubliceerde documenten, plannen en foto's toont de auteur de evolutie van 'een grote, totaal onbewoonbare puinhoop' naar een volwaardige, moderne stad. 'Een stad vol stellingen' is een unieke hommage aan onze voorouders en de inspanningen die ze leverden om de stad Nieuwpoort op te bouwen tot wat ze vandaag is.

The Resilient City explores urban disasters from around the globe and the ongoing restoration of urban life.
